How to Download a YouTube Shorts Thumbnail (Vertical 9:16)

Shorts thumbnails are vertical 9:16, not 16:9. Here's how to download one from any Shorts link on PC, iPhone and Android, and why the size differs.

YouTube Shorts are vertical, so their cover images work a little differently from standard 16:9 videos. This guide shows how to grab a Shorts thumbnail from any link, and what to expect from the size and quality.

A Shorts URL looks like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, but the 11-character video ID inside it behaves exactly like a normal video ID. So the fastest way to save a Shorts thumbnail is:

  1. Open the Short and tap Share → Copy link (or copy the URL from the address bar).
  2. Paste it into the Shorts thumbnail downloader — or the main downloader, which accepts Shorts links too.
  3. Pick the best available size and download.

The tool reads the ID from the /shorts/ link automatically — there’s nothing special you need to strip out.

Shorts thumbnails are 9:16, not 16:9

Regular videos use a 16:9 thumbnail (up to 1280×720). Shorts are filmed and displayed vertically, so their cover art is 9:16 — for example 1080×1920. A few practical implications:
