How to Download a YouTube Shorts Thumbnail (Vertical 9:16)
Shorts thumbnails are vertical 9:16, not 16:9. Here's how to download one from any Shorts link on PC, iPhone and Android, and why the size differs.
YouTube Shorts are vertical, so their cover images work a little differently from standard 16:9 videos. This guide shows how to grab a Shorts thumbnail from any link, and what to expect from the size and quality.
Shorts links work like any other video
A Shorts URL looks like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID, but the 11-character video ID inside it behaves exactly like a normal video ID. So the fastest way to save a Shorts thumbnail is:
- Open the Short and tap Share → Copy link (or copy the URL from the address bar).
- Paste it into the Shorts thumbnail downloader — or the main downloader, which accepts Shorts links too.
- Pick the best available size and download.
The tool reads the ID from the /shorts/ link automatically — there’s nothing special you need to strip out.
Shorts thumbnails are 9:16, not 16:9
Regular videos use a 16:9 thumbnail (up to 1280×720). Shorts are filmed and displayed vertically, so their cover art is 9:16 — for example 1080×1920. A few practical implications:
- The image you download will be portrait, not landscape.
- If a Short was created without a custom cover, YouTube uses a frame from the video itself.
- On the Shorts shelf and feed, the crop is aggressive — keep faces and text centered.

Saving on each device
- PC / Mac: click Download; the file saves to your Downloads folder. (See Save on PC.)
- iPhone / iPad: open in Safari, long-press the image, tap Add to Photos. (See Save on iPhone.)
- Android: tap Download in Chrome; it lands in your gallery. (See Save on Android.)
Designing a Shorts cover that performs
Because Shorts autoplay in a fast-scrolling feed, the cover has a split second to register. Test your vertical design before publishing — the thumbnail tester shows how it reads at small sizes, and our guide on thumbnails that get clicks covers the fundamentals.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download a Shorts thumbnail in HD? You get the largest size YouTube stored for that Short — often the vertical source itself. Quality depends on how it was uploaded.
Why is my Shorts thumbnail landscape, not vertical? Some Shorts reuse a 16:9 frame if no vertical cover was set. You’re seeing what YouTube actually serves.
Does the main downloader work for Shorts? Yes — paste a /shorts/ link and it works exactly like a normal video.
